Walter Hendrie

Walter HENDRIE is a brick wall. He was first found listed as the deceased father of Sarah HENDRIE1 in her marriage register. His occupation is listed as an Iron Moulder. Her mother is listed as Isabella BROWN who at that time was married for the second time to George CROZIER.

Marriage and children

No record can be found of his marriage to Isabella BROWN2 or a birth record for his daughter Sarah HENDRIE3, although a birth record exists for a son Richard HENDRY4 who was born in 1865 in Old Monkland. Both parents and place of birth match those of Sarah so it is reasonable to assume they are siblings and that Walter and Isabella lived in a marriage-like relationship.

Birth

If we assume that he was at least 20 years or older when his son Richard was born, then Walter was born sometime before 1845. Even with a global search using multiple name variations of all records in Scotland’s People, no record can be found of his birth in Old Monkland and only two possible births both of which are in Kirkintilloch5, and so because his parents’ names are unknown there would be no evidence to support either person as being the same Walter HENDRIE.

Death

Walter HENDRIE died sometime after 1868 when Jane was born and before 1876 when Isabella BROWN remarried6. The fact that Isabella was living in Old Monkland when she remarried means that Walter HENDRIE most probably died in Old Monkland

Isabella BROWN remarried in 18766 to a George CROZIER and although she is recorded using her birth name and listed as a spinster, this record is supported by the information provided by Sarah HENDRIE in her marriage register1. It is further supported by an 1881 census record7 at the same address that lists Jane HENDRIE aged 12 as “wife’s daughter’.

Census records

There is a census record of a Walter HENDRY aged 7 in 1851 in Old Monkland8 which would place his date of birth as 1844 and his age when Richard HENDRY9 was born as 21. This is within acceptable limits and it is also the only Walter HENDRIE or a spelling variation of HENDRY or HENRY in Old Monkland. However, there are no other records to support the idea that this is the same person.

Collateral Lines

It is often useful to explore the collateral lines of a “brick wall” ancestor as they often lead to useful information. This has not been the case in this instance

Isabella BROWN (as Isabella Hendrie) is not recorded in the 1871 census in Old Monkland10. Richard HENDRY and Jane HENDRIE were born before 1871 but they are not recorded in Old Monkland either. As previously noted, Isabella BROWN was married in Old Monkland6 [5] and both she and Jane HENDRIE were living there in 18817 so there is no reason to look for this family anywhere else.

Richard HENDRY is not recorded in the 1881 census with his sister or mother. He would have been 16 years old at that time so he could have been living elsewhere. Apart from a Birth and baptism record, no other records of Richard HENDRY can be found.
